Free Insulation for 1000 Waikato families
By Anonymous on November 28, 2013

Fuseworks Media (13/11/2013) has reported on the Warm Our Whare initiative that has been set up to provide free home insulation to 1000 vulnerable Waikato families.  The scheme is run by Te Puna Oranga, Waikato's DHB Maori health service and is an extension of the successful Warm Up New Zealand : Heat Smart programme. To date Heat Smart has provided 85,000 families with free home insulation.

General Manager of Maori Health, Ditre Tamatea said that 505 Waikato homes have already received free insulation as part of Te Puna Oranga's Project 270.

He looks forward to giving many more Waikato families the same opportunity to reap the rewards of free insualtion as a result of the Warm Our Whare component of Project 270.

Child/whanau poverty is addressed in Project 270 by providing eligible families with food and health services in schools and free home insulation.

Waikato families living in damp homes end up facing a wide range of health issues, including rheumatic fever and respiratory problems.  This is a major concern as an alarming 270,000 children within Aotearoa New Zealand live below the poverty line.

Home insulation creates a healthier, warmer and drier places to live: “which improves recipients' health and general wellbeing," said Mr Tamatea.

In order to meet criteria for assessment, applicants must live in Hamilton, South Waikato or within 30 km of Hamilton.  The home has to be built before the year 2000 and the applicants need to be eligible for a community services card, have children under 17 years or be over 65 years old.

Mr Tamatea commented that you can rent the home or own it: "However, you have to have permission from the property owner to have the home insulated," he said.

This programme works on a first-come, first-serve basis and intakes close for the Warm Our Whare scheme on 28 February 2013.
