CHALLENGE
As winner of the Australasian Hotel of the Year award, the five-star Park Hyatt hotel was always set to deliver high standards for finish, design and performance. However, the high-quality features were never intended to stop at design with an integrated focus on thermal, acoustic, and fire performance a key priority to ensure optimal comfort, safety and privacy for guests.
SOLUTION
To ensure the hotel achieved the highest level of insulation, Marshall Day acoustical consultants conducted a comprehensive thermal and acoustic assessment. The findings were outlined in a detailed report that provided recommendations on the thermal and acoustic products required to meet or exceed the project’s specifications.
After carefully considering the extensive range of insulation options on the market, Knauf Insulation’s speciality range of Earthwool® glasswool insulation was selected. With occupant comfort and privacy being a primary focus for the hotel, Earthwool® glasswool insulation was identified as the perfect solution for absorbing the transfer of unwanted sound from external sources and between adjoining rooms.
Earthwool® glasswool insulation is manufactured with Knauf Insulation’s unique DriTherm® Technology with a silicone treatment that creates enhanced moisture resistance. The insulation also features TwinTech® technology that ensures a smooth finish on both sides, making it easier to handle during installation. Additional benefits were achieved due to the product’s revolutionary ECOSE® Technology, a unique bio-based binder that makes the insulation softer and less itchy to touch. Earthwool® glasswool is also non-combustible insulation, it has been tested in accordance with the stringent AS 1530.1 Combustibility Test for Material. Also, Earthwool® is eco-friendly and sustainable insulation, it is BRANZ-appraised and holds GreenTag Level A and Eurofins GOLD certification.
China Hawkings Construction, together with the internal fit-out contractors, installed the Earthwool® glasswool products as specified throughout the project. With compressed packaging to reduce onsite space requirements, the installation process was quick and efficient, which benefited the project’s construction timeline. The high ratio of product contained in each pack compared to other products also meant that site activities were not impacted when the contractors moved from level to level.
RESULT
Prioritising thermal, acoustic and fire safety by using the high-performance Earthwool® glasswool insulation products was important to ensure the Park Hyatt Auckland was built to standards befitting a modern luxury hotel. It also optimised occupant safety, noise reduction and comfort levels.
The right combination of insulation materials and systems delivered a high level of thermal comfort, ensuring the rooms stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Guests can also be assured a good night’s sleep due to the high-performance acoustic insulation that has been incorporated into the sophisticated wall systems. While invisible to the naked eye, it works quietly in the background. Being non-combustible, Earthwool® glasswool also addresses the stringent fire safety regulations required to protect the building and its occupants in the event of a fire.
Knauf Insulation’s Earthwool® glasswool has not only helped to meet the architect's specifications for thermal, acoustic and fire performance, but also contributed to the hotel's sustainability and comfort credentials, making it a dream destination for travellers from around the world.
