Stuff.co.nz has reported (29/11/2016) on the recent New Zealand Master Builders House of the Year Sustainable Home lifestyle award. The award was won by a Fairly based builder, Lain Hellmrich from High Country Carpentry.
Mr Hellmrich's business entered the Oamaru home in the $1-2 million home category and took out the Sustainable Home lifestyle award. He said that the award also rewarded the owner, Jeanne Gray, for making efforts to make the home sustainable.
The home incorporates ultra high levels of insulation, double glazing and locally-sourced and sustainable logs and timber. The off-grid home was built using generators for power and water was brought onto the site for the build.
Mr Hellmrich said that he would like to see sustainable homes become a priority in the building industry.
