The Brown Family Home Case Study

The Brown Family Home Case Study

CHALLENGE

The Brown Family Home located in Christchurch, New Zealand was built with a focus on acoustic performance. With three young children, the owners wanted to ensure the children could play in one room while also keeping the noise to a minimum in the adjoining rooms.

SOLUTION

Home owner, Kate Brown said: “This will be our forever home and so it was important the insulation was of high quality and would perform for the lifetime of the building. We were also installing the insulation ourselves so we wanted a product that would be easy to install and not itchy.”

Earthwool® glasswool insulation: Wall batt, R2.6HD was chosen for the internal walls to aid the reduction of sound transfer from the bedrooms, bathrooms and living area. Earthwool® glasswool insulation: Wall batt, R2.6HD, will also create a thermal barrier, which will help to maintain and control a comfortable temperature in each room.

In the external walls, Earthwool® glasswool insulation: Wall batt, R2.8SHD was used. Earthwool® glasswool insulation: Wall batt, R2.8SHD will create a thermal barrier to outside elements and also absorb sound transfer from outside the home. Understanding that a house will lose most of its heating and cooling through an un-insulated ceiling, the owners decided to use Earthwool® glasswool insulation: Ceiling batt, R4.1. Earthwool® glasswool insulation: Ceiling batt, R4.1 is one of the top rated ceiling products available in New Zealand, providing optimal thermal performance. Aiming for a higher R-Value in the ceiling will also aid the reduction in energy bills.

RESULT

“We have been in the home for six months now and we are very pleased with the acoustic performance of the home,” said Kate. “Friends and family have also commented on how quiet and comfortable our home is.”

Earthwool® glasswool insulation is made using up to 80 per cent recycled glass and with ECOSE® Technology, a sustainable binder based on rapidly renewable materials and with no added formaldehyde. It is super-soft and easy to install, making it the ideal insulation solution for DIYers like the owners of The Brown Family Home.
