CHALLENGE
The newly developed Lincoln Road Motel in central Christchurch includes 16 rooms and a manager’s residence. As the motel is situated on the corner of a busy intersection it was important the building fabric reduced external noise and from travelling between guest bedrooms. Block wall construction was used for the adjoining walls, providing both acoustic and fire performance.
SOLUTION
Due to limited space in the internal wall cavity, the thickness of the insulation was crucial. The insulation needed to fit inside the cavity without compression and it was imperative it provided superior thermal and acoustic performance.
Earthwool® glasswool insulation: R1.5 DriTherm® Masonry slab was used not only as it met the specific size requirements, but also due to its excellent thermal and acoustic performance. The external walls featured Earthwool® glasswool insulation: R2.8 Wall batts. This high rated insulation absorbs external sound transfer while ensuring a comfortable indoor temperature is maintained all year round. The Motel’s ceilings were insulated with Earthwool® glasswool insulation: Ceiling batt R3.6, creating a complete thermal envelope.
RESULT
Not only will DriTherm Masonry slab provide excellent thermal and acoustic performance in the Lincoln Road Motel, but the cost efficiency of using it over a polystyrene substitute has resulted in a significant saving for the contractor. The inclusion of DriTherm Mansory slab combined with Earthwool® glasswool wall and ceiling segments will allow the Motel to maintain a comfortable temperature all year round whilst ensuring sound isn’t transferred between rooms.
